You probably think bourbon whiskey is named after the whiskey itself. Wrong. The whiskey is named after a place. And that place was named after a French royal family. But here's the twist -- most Americans have no idea which family, or why they got an entire Kentucky county named after them.

Most people assume bourbon comes from Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Makes sense, right? New Orleans, whiskey culture, jazz -- it all fits. But bourbon whiskey actually comes from Bourbon County, Kentucky, established in 1786.

Here's the real story. Bourbon County was named after the House of Bourbon, the royal family that ruled France and Spain. The name itself comes from Old French -- *Bourbon* -- which traced back to a small town in central France called Bourbonnais. The town's name probably derives from *Borvo*, a Celtic god of hot springs worshipped by people living in that region around 50 BCE. When American settlers were carving up Kentucky, they honored the French crown that had helped them win independence. So they named a county after French royalty. Whiskey distillers in that county started labeling their product "bourbon" in the early 1800s, and the name stuck permanently.

Now when you drink bourbon, you're technically sipping something named after a Celtic deity, filtered through French kings, and stamped onto Kentucky soil. That's three centuries and two continents in a single word.
